Jason B. Carmel, MD, PhD, is a child neurologist and motor system neuroscientist dedicated to improving movement and function in individuals with central nervous system injuries. He specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults with conditions such as cerebral palsy at the Movement Recovery Clinic and evaluates infants with delayed motor milestones in the Infant Movement Evaluation Clinic. Dr. Carmel works closely with patients and their families to develop personalized treatment plans that align with their goals for mobility, independence, and participation in daily life. Dr. Carmel is Chief of the Division of Child Neurology and Executive Director of the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Carmel directs the Movement Recovery Laboratory, where he leads groundbreaking research on activity-based therapies that harness the body’s own capacity for recovery. His work explores innovative approaches, including brain and spinal cord stimulation and intensive behavioral training, to strengthen neural connections and restore movement. His research has demonstrated that stimulating intact pathways after injury can enhance their function, promote new connections, and improve motor skills. Dr. Carmel is committed to bridging the gap between research and clinical care. By translating discoveries from the lab into more effective therapies, he is shaping the future of treatment for patients with cerebral palsy and other movement disorders, across their lifespan. His ultimate goal as a physician-scientist is to develop and refine therapies that help individuals regain mobility, confidence, and quality of life. A leader in neurorehabilitation, Dr. Carmel is a standing NIH study section member, program chair of the American Society for Neurorehabilitation, and a steering committee member of the Cerebral Palsy Research Network. He also serves as a scientific and medical advisor to companies advancing neuromodulation technologies. His work is supported by the National Institutes of Health and private foundations.

Jason B. Carmel, MD, PhD, is a child neurologist and motor system neuroscientist interested in central nervous system injury and repair. During his postdoctoral fellowship in Jack Martins laboratory, Dr. Carmel developed expertise in corticospinal injury and response to activity-based treatments. Using a combination of anatomy, physiology (brain mapping), and behavior, he has been able to identify the brain circuits that adapt to developmental brain injury.Dr. Carmels Movement Recovery Laboratory uses activity-based therapies, including brain stimulation and intensive behavioral training to promote recovery of function, both in rodents and humans. In a rodent hemiparesis model, they have demonstrated that stimulation of spared motor circuits causes them to sprout at their terminations in the spinal cord, form functional connections with spinal motor circuits, and restore motor skill.Dr. Carmels expertise in animal models of human disease and clinical neurology will allow him to translate the gains in understanding that we hope to achieve in the proposed studies into improved treatments for children with cerebral palsy. This is Dr. Camels goal as a physician-scientist: to direct a truly translational program in which we model activity-based repair strategies in young animals with early brain injury and then use those results to design better treatments for children at risk for cerebral palsy.

Danielle K Emmet, DO

Dr. Danielle Emmet, DO is a board-certified physiatrist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Emmet earned her medical degree at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine where she also completed an additional year-long fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. While in medical school, she conducted clinical research on the association between body awareness, osteopathic manipulative treatment and perceptions of pain, which has since been published. Dr. Emmet completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Westchester Medical Center and residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at New York Presbyterian-Columbia and Cornell. During residency she pursued advanced training in evaluating and treating pelvic pain and musculoskeletal disorders affecting the pelvic girdle. Clinically, Dr. Emmet cares for a broad range of people. She has a particular interest in treating musculoskeletal causes of pelvic girdle pain and musculoskeletal conditions affecting pregnant and postpartum women. She is passionate about the important role physiatrists play in treating pelvic pain and addressing the healthcare disparity for these conditions which are often undertreated, can be potentially disabling, and greatly impact a person's quality of life. She also provides comprehensive rehabilitation for people living with disabilities and people regaining independence following injuries, illness, or medical treatments. She is skilled in spasticity management for people with neurological conditions. She integrates the principles of lifestyle medicine into the longitudinal care of her patients. She acknowledges the unique psychological experiences and needs of patients undergoing rehabilitation, and has advanced training in psychosomatic medicine. Additionally, she is skilled in providing Osteopathic manipulative treatment. Dr. Emmet is an active member of American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Association of Academic Physiatrists, International Pelvic Pain Society, and American Academy of Osteopathy.
