History

This Business Originally Started on 2210 Church Avenue In Brooklyn, NY. It was inspired by Sybil Bernard (1934-2000), A Guyanese native, and mother of nine, who struggled and fought her way to America in search of a better way of life. In America, she worked multiple jobs and saved enough money to bring all of her children over from Guyana to New York City. With the help of all her children, Sybil started a bakery out of her home where she sold bread and pastries throughout the five boroughs. She then opened her first store in Queens, New York. She has since then left behind multiple stores and a brand that won't be forgotten. As of 2016, we have relocated from 2210 Church Avenue to 998 Flatbush Avenue with a new face and even better recipes.

Specialties

Island Express got its start when an ambitious woman named Sybil came to America from Guyana to build a new life for herself and her children. That was in 1976, and Sybil, our grandmother, created a business that would sustain a family for generations and serve a borough for decades. Though we're serving the same Caribbean foods and have maintained the family feel Sybil started, we've re-branded and modernized. Everything we serve is made fresh in house, including our drinks and baked goods, and everyone who dines with us is treated like family. Located in a bustling Brooklyn neighborhood, we stay pretty busy and welcome guests from all walks of life. We think that's just how Sybil would've wanted it.

I came to Island Express in Brooklyn really craving Caribbean food, especially the more common Jamaican dishes I'm used to. I didn't realize this was more of a Guyanese-style spot, so the flavors...

My husband was in the neighborhood and picked up some patties: chicken & beef and some pastries with pineapple & currants. I really enjoyed the pastries especially the pineapple flavored because...

The food was ok. The service was ok. This place has no ambiance because although it's supposed to be freshly made food that is prepared her, it stills gives off fast food vibes. My daughter...

It's OK but not as good as it is hyped to be. I would give it 3.5 stars. The bad: The jerk chicken can be good but some days it's small portions and greasy. The fried roti is full of dry...
