Herkimer Home State Historic Site

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the Erie Canal, one of the 19th century's greatest engineering projects, and its impact on the growth of New York State and the nation. The site features a Visitor Center with exhibits tracing the history of the canal, as well as structures dating from different eras of its development, including the remains of the Schoharie Aqueduct and the Putnam Lock Stand at Yankee Hill. Visitors can also explore the 18th century Fort Hunter and the Lower Castle Mohawk village, and enjoy the open grounds and picnic areas. Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site offers educational outreach programs, school field trips, and special events. The site has event tents available for rental, and permits are required for gatherings of more than 20 people. Interpretive signs throughout the grounds provide information on the canal features and pre-canal history.
