Jill Whyte is a gynecologic oncologist at Northwell Health Physician Partners Gynecologic Oncology at New Hyde Park, NY. She specializes in surgical management of womens cancers, including cancers of the ovary, uterus, cervix and vulva. She also performs complex benign gynecologic surgery and has a special interest in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. She is the site primary investigator for a national trial looking at robotic surgery for the management of cervical cancer. Dr. Whyte is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in gynecological oncology and is as an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.While in college at Penn State University, Dr. Whyte volunteered for the countrys largest student-run philanthropic event, a 48-hour dance marathon to raise money for pediatric cancer care and research. Getting to know families who benefitted from the fundraising sparked her interest in cancer care and inspired her to go to medical school. She attended NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency and fellowship training in gynecologic oncology. She found that specialty the perfect place that brings everything togetherher interests in cancer care, womens health, and surgery. The opportunity to help women feel more comfortable talking about gynecological health concerns appealed to Dr. Whyte. There are still a lot of women who suffer with gynecologic issues, both benign and cancer-related, because theyre too embarrassed to talk about it, she says. I try to create a warm and open environment where patients can talk about whats going on with their bodies.Dr. Whytes patients are typically referred to her because of a cancer diagnosis or the suspicion that they have cancer. Seeing any kind of oncologist is inherently a stressful experience, she says. The office staff works together to ease that stress. We try not to rush visits, have conversations when patients are dressed and sitting in the office rather than in an exam room, and encourage patients to bring family members with them, she says. Patients are introduced to team members, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, from the first visit, so that they always feel like they can call the office and get someone to talk to, she says.Dr. Whyte says her patients have taught her to slow down, to better explain complex information, and to listen carefully, especially when it comes to the goals of their treatment. It's important that we're subject matter experts, that we know the latest research results and best practices, and that we're highly skilled, but then its also important that we really take into account whats important to patients.Dr. Whyte supports Any Mountain Everest, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to fund research on ovarian cancer prevention and early detection. As a personal fundraising effort, she climbed to the Mount Everest base camp along with ovarian cancer survivors, medical providers, and caregivers in April 2023.
