Erna Busch-Devereaux, MD, is the chief of breast surgery at Huntington Hospital and a board-certified surgeon at Northwell.Drawn to surgery from the start, Dr. Busch-Devereaux has had a deep interest in using skills that require dexterity and precision. "Being a surgeon allows me to do that, while also providing care that will be meaningful to my patients," she says. While she began her practice in surgical oncology, Dr. Busch-Devereaux quickly chose to specialize in breast surgery in part because of the innovative and major changes she saw happening in the field, particularly in lumpectomy, mastectomy and lymph node procedures. Most notably, she was an early advocate of nipple-sparing procedures that are now more routine and widely utilized. "This type of procedure helps maintain the breast form in its more original state and provides the nicest aesthetic outcome, which is important for patients from an emotional standpoint," she says.Dr. Busch-Devereaux also focuses on procedures such as wire-free or implanted seed biopsies, which are performed when a surgical biopsy is required after imaging and offer a more comfortable experience for patients. After graduating from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Dr. Busch-Devereaux trained in general surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center - NY and completed a surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. She started her career at Northwell in 1993, then spent six years at ProhealthCare Associates. She formed Breast Surgery Associates in 2004 and, together with several colleagues, created a breast center to provide multidisciplinary breast cancer care for the community. The group joined Northwell in 2012. Along the way, Dr. Busch-Devereaux has had notable academic appointments, including assistant professor of surgery at Cornell University Medical. She's currently an assistant professor of surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.Under Dr. Busch-Devereaux's leadership, Huntington Hospital achieved certification from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, which is given to breast centers showing a high level of quality measures and programs designed to improve outcomes. Most of all, Dr. Busch-Devereaux is proud of her approach to patient care. "I treat my patients the way I'd want to be treated," she says.

Magdalena Pomykol-Petryk, MD

Magdalena Pomykol-Petryk, MD, is a specialist in hematology and oncology at Northwell Health. While growing up in Poland as the daughter of two doctors, she always envisioned becoming a physician herself, and graduated from the Medical Academy of Bialystok before coming to the United States in 1990. After that, she completed residencies at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Mount Sinai St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, followed by a fellowship at Columbia University College. Dr. Pomykol-Petryk chose oncology as her specialty because she wanted to make a difference in the lives of patients suffering from cancer. For her, the most appealing aspect was depth of patient care, which involved entire families and lifelong relationships. "As an oncologist, you have interactions with patients from the very beginning, you get to know them and family members, their lives, what matters to them, and you're truly part of this special bond," she says. "The level of intensity is huge, and that's what I like. I appreciate being able to make a difference in these patients' lives." Though Dr. Pomykol-Petryk sees many breast cancer patients, she also provides care for a variety of malignant hematology cancers including lymphoma, myeloma, and chronic leukemia, as well as non-malignant hematology conditions. She appreciates the high level of collaboration available at Northwell Health, and specifically at Huntington Hospital, where she practices. "Our team is excellent, and patients never feel alone," she says. "It truly feels like we're all one family. We work together so there's a seamless patient experience. Whether you're talking to the check-in person, the phlebotomist, chemotherapy nurses, or me, you'll feel cared for. That's the most important thing to us." What she's learned from her patients is strength, she adds. Getting to know each patient on a deeper, personal level and see their resilience and grace in the midst of a difficult diagnosis and treatment is inspiring, says Dr. Pomykol-Petryk. "We're all so grateful to know these amazing patients and to help them on their journey," she says.

Heather Dawn Zinkin, MD

Heather Zinkin, MD, joined Northwell Health in 2013 as a radiation oncologist, and has been in practice for nearly 20 years. She’s also an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and chief of radiation medicine at Huntington Hospital. Her path toward medicine began early, with a deep interest in science and math, as well as a passion for solving puzzles. She earned her medical degree from the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, followed by a medicine internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and radiation oncology residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center/Brown University. “My favorite aspect of my job is interacting with patients and helping them understand their diagnosis and optimal therapy, as well as alleviating their anxiety,” she says. “They have taught me to be a better listener and the importance of focusing on the whole person.” This approach prompted Dr. Zinkin to become involved with the Northwell Wellness Center, which offers a breadth of resources, including nutrition, acupuncture, support groups, yoga, Tai Chi and support from holistic nurses. She regularly offers lectures and free educational sessions for cancer patients and survivors on topics that include various care options, as well as nutrition and stress reduction. “Services like these enhance the entire patient experience,” she says. “Incorporating this lifestyle medication empowers patients to improve their outcomes and quality of life.” Her enthusiasm for more well-rounded cancer strategies led Dr. Zinkin to earn a certification in nutrition from Cornell University to offer insight and recommendations for oncology-focused nutrition. She’s also certified to prescribe medical marijuana, which can be very helpful in managing treatment related symptoms including pain and nausea, she says. Northwell has a cannabis working group and a clinical study on the use of medical cannabis for complementary oncology care. Dr. Zinkin enrolls patients in clinical trials and refers them for integrative services, including Reiki therapy and reflexology. “It’s not enough for cancer patients to just get through treatment; they deserve to thrive and have the best quality of life possible,” she says. “By focusing on that, we can give them the support and resources they need while also delivering meaningful care.”
