Empire Drive-in
Empire Drive-In is a large-scale temporary installation and programming platform constructed from junked cars and salvaged materials, inviting audiences to engage with themes of cinema, car culture, planned obsolescence, and the distinction between public and private space. Designed by New York artists Todd Chandler and Jeff Stark, the project has seen collaboration with over a dozen other artists and craftspeople.
Initially commissioned for the 2010 01SJ Biennial in San Jose, California, Empire Drive-In has been featured in various locations, including the New York Hall of Science in Queens. The installation serves as both a monument to reuse and a commentary on waste, creating a unique space for community engagement and reflection on contemporary reality.
