WALTER V-Drives Walter V-Drives are precision gear drives which allow inboard engines to be placed in the stern ( rear ) of a boat for greater safety, better handling, increased space, reduced drag, lower bow rise, shallower draft and less maintenance. The simple rugged design -- made in the USA -- has been proven in service for more than 60 years ! The Walter V-Drive enables the propeller to be tucked under the hull in front of the rudder ( below left ) -- instead of hanging off the stern next to the swim platform as with a sterndrive or inboard/outboard ( below right ). This safety feature is important on small recreational runabouts designed for the water sports enthusiast and his / her family, especially with an inexperienced captain or small children. Q - U - I - E - T design features time-tested precision-ground helical gears ( same manufacturing process as aircraft gearing ) for smooth and quiet operation. The small vertical offset allows the engine to be mounted lower in the boat resulting in a lower the center of gravity. This lower center of gravity greatly enhances boat handling, tracking and stability. Walter V-Drives are available in Direct Mounted and Remote Mounted models, in a wide variety of sizes -- each with numerous standard gear ratios and V-angles -- to accommodate nearly every application on runabouts, wakeboard boats, houseboats, cruisers and fishing boats. Remote-Mounted models ( also known as "Independently-Mounted" ) can be positioned a few inches or several feet away from the transmission, allowing the boat designer a great variety of engine placements. The remote mounted V-Drive, securely fastened to the hull stringers with its own adjustable mounting brackets and thrust bearing, allows the engine to be soft mounted. A flexible joint assembly, splined connecting shaft and self-aligning bearing isolates engine movement from the propeller shaft resulting in less noise and vibration being transmitted through the hull -- especially useful in diesel engine applications. Walter V-Drives have proven their reliability with more than 60 years in the field. In addition to the highest quality precision ground helical gears made from the finest alloy steels, Walter V-Drives are manufactured with rugged tapered roller bearings, one piece main housings for vibration dampening and accurate gear alignment, self-reversing bi-directional oil pump to force feed lubrication to all internal components and high capacity water-jacketed cooling to reduce operating temperatures and increase life. There is no substitute for time-tested reliability !

Apex Gear & Machine Co

After dropping out of school, Walter secured an apprenticeship at Paramount Tool Co. where he developed the skills that would serve him his whole life. His apprenticeship complete, he took a job with Braun Gear Company, where Slim as he was known, was made foreman at the ripe old age of 23. He stayed at Braun until mid 1943, when he was made plant manager for Morey Machine Company, builders of shell lathes for defense production with 1500 employees- not bad for an immigrant kid with a 4th grade education! After the war, Slim left Morey, bought an old building in in Newark NJ, a lathe, a milling machine and a 7 Fellows Gear Shaper and founded Apex Gear and Machine Co, officially incorporating in June1946. His first big account was American Pool Products- parent of Hayward Pump, but it wasn't until the Korean War that Apex really took off. Running 2 shifts with 50+ employees, Slim began long lasting relationships with many key clients, U.S. Baird Corp., Syncro Machine Co, Langston Co. to name a few. Slim retired in 1971, handing the reins to his sons, Robert and Richard. Bobby retired in 1983, leaving control of the company to Dick and his son Steve. A merger with Dominick Tucci's Meadowlands Gear Co in 1986, brought the key element of gear grinding into Apex's arsenal.Today, Slim's great-grandson-in-law Keith has joined the fold, bringing with him his unique marine/ mechanical background. Anyone in our industry can tell you that things are not what they used to be, but Apex has weathered the storm- still committed to producing quality gears and still proud of the clients we serve.
