Dr. Daniel G. Nicastri, a former Commander in the U.S. Navy and decorated military veteran, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. With expertise in minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgery, thoracic trauma, and robotic surgery, Dr. Nicastri has published extensively on topics such as early lung cancer screening and surgery, lung cancer surgery outcomes, and tracheal surgery. He currently sees patients in Manhattan and Westchester and has been recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in 2020 and 2021.
Dr. Nicastri completed his General Surgery Residency at Mount Sinai and served as a Staff Surgeon in Guantanamo Bay, where he received several military medals. He then pursued a cardiothoracic surgery residency at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell and spent three years on Active Duty with the U.S. Navy, serving as a staff thoracic surgeon at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. During his military service, he deployed to the NATO Role 3 Trauma Hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Dr. Nicastri joined Mount Sinai in 2014 and is fluent in English, Italian, and Spanish.
