Established in 1973, the New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a private, nonprofit corporation providing pretrial release services in the city's criminal courts. It works to decrease the number of days spent in detention by defendants and offers assistance with alternatives to incarceration programs in screening defendants for noncustodial sanctions. The agency also provides information and research services to criminal justice policy makers, city officials and the public. In addition, the New York City Criminal Justice Agency reduces the rate of nonappearance in court among defendants released from detention and awaiting trial. It is comprised of the operations, research, planning, and systems departments, as well as maintains Alternative to Incarceration Information Services (ATIIS) unit. The department is headquartered in Manhattan, N.Y., and maintains an office in New York City.
