Dr. Anca Dinu Askanase recently joined the CUMC Rheumatology faculty where she is the founder and clinical director of Columbia's new Lupus Center and the Director of Rheumatology Clinical Trials. Dr. Askanase is an internationally renowned clinician, diagnostician and researcher with more than 15 years specializing in complex Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Dr. Askanase trained as a rheumatologist at New York University where she remained for more than 15 years on faculty, directing clinical trials, training fellows and residents, and treating challenging cases of SLE at NYU's prestigious Hospitals. Dr. Askanase's academic career has focused primarily on the care of patients with SLE and other autoimmune diseases. In order to provide better care for patients suffering from these devastating diseases, she embarked on a journey of research and discovery, with the goal of understanding disease outcomes from both the patients' and physicians' perspective while helping to redefine 21st century therapeutic options. It is Dr. Askanase's hope that by helping to establish widely accepted parameters for quantifying the impact of the disease and the response to medications, all doctors will have effective benchmarks and therapeutic options to better treat patients with SLE's often confounding symptoms. In addition to numerous publications and benchmark clinical trials, Dr. Askanase is a member of the two major international consortia aimed at providing the collaboration between lupus doctors needing to improve outcomes and therapies in Lupus: the SLICC (SLE international Collaborating Clinics) and the LNTN (Lupus Nephritis Trial Network).Dr. Askanase believes that excellent care often involves bringing novel therapies to her patients with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases; thus, she has been involved in every major SLE clinical drug trial and multiple NIH and industry sponsored clinical trials. One of her most rewarding experiences was her involvement as the Site Principal Investigator in the registrational study that led to the FDA approval of Belimumab, the first new Lupus drug in over 50 years. Dr. Askanase also designed and executed the only study looking at a rational approach (based on pharmacogenetics and metabolite measurement) to use Azathioprine in the treatment of Lupus. She is currently evaluating the use of ACTH as a steroid alternative in lupus nephritis. Dr. Askanase is also a proud Columbia Alumnus and still lives in Morningside Heights with her husband and two children.

Dr. Novitsky is internationally known for his expertise in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery as well complex inguinal and ventral hernia repairs. Driven by a determination to improve outcomes for the millions of patients who undergo hernia surgery each year, he has focused intensively on research to advance surgical technique and improve tissue responses to surgical mesh. He is perhaps best known for pioneering techniques for minimally-invasive ventral hernia repair and open abdominal wall reconstructions; the procedure known as transversus abdominis muscle release (TAR), which he first described in 2006, has become widely adopted worldwide since he published three-year results in 2009. His current national leadership roles include chairmanship of the Practice Advisory Committee, Americas Hernia Society; membership on the Guidelines Committee of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES); the Value Analysis Initiative of the SAGES Hernia Task force; American Hernias Society Board of Governors, and others. Dr. Novitsky earned his medical degree at Albany College and completed residencies in General Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center and University of Massachusetts, Worcester, followed by fellowships in minimally invasive surgery at University of Massachusetts and the Carolinas Medical Center. He was Chief of Laparoscopic Surgery for four years at University of Connecticut Health Center prior to his move to Cleveland in 2011. Dr. Novitsky has received over $2 million in grants from SAGES, the National Institutes of Health, and other funders to research improvements in hernia repair and gastroesophageal reflux disease. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles and numerous book chapters. In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr. Novitsky mentors post-doctoral students and remains actively involved in medical education. In sharing his talents with our patients, faculty, and medical students, Dr. Novitsky will undoubtedly strengthen the Division of General Surgery in all facets of patient care, research, and education.

Pediatric rheumatologic diseases can be complex, and figuring out the problem can be like solving a mystery. My interest in pediatric rheumatology began during my pediatric residency, when I was able to care for patients with arthritis, lupus, and other rheumatologic problems. Finding the right diagnosis, then helping patients find treatments that made them feel better was very gratifying! I now treat children of all ages, from infancy to young adulthood, with all types of rheumatologic problems, including arthritis, lupus, myositis, and vasculitis. I also have a specific interest in evaluating and treating patients with fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome—conditions that are sometimes referred to as amplified musculoskeletal pain syndromes (AMPS). I am the director of the Pediatric AMPS Program here at Columbia. For all of my patients, I work to provide an accurate diagnosis and support as they navigate the treatment process with their families. My goal is to provide compassionate, patient-centered, and family-centered care. My research interests are focused on juvenile fibromyalgia. I also participate in clinical research projects related to pediatric lupus nephritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and juvenile arthritis. I am very involved in teaching rheumatology to the next generation of pediatric doctors, and I am honored to work with medical students and pediatricians-in-training to help educate them on the evaluation and treatment of patients with rheumatologic disorders.
