Guggenheim HQ
The Guggenheim stands out as one of Frank Lloyd Wright's greatest achievements. Contrasting sharply with its Fifth Avenue surroundings, the building's exterior recalls a nautilus shell, while inside, the Rotunda spirals upward seven floors, inviting visitors to experience art in an uncommon way. The view is open and peering out at the dizzying effect created by the circular movement confirms that the architecture is as much a masterpiece as the modern art enclosed within.Best and worst time to go to the Guggenheim MuseumWeekdays are less crowded than weekends. Tours led by gallery educators depart the main floor daily at 2 p.m. Cold and rainy days attract more people. Saturday evenings, when visitors pay what they wish, are typically very crowded.Must see/do at the Guggenheim MuseumThe Kandinsky Gallery hosts rotating retrospectives of the Russian painter's work. The Thannhauser Collection was bequeathed to the Guggenheim in 1978, and includes masterpieces by Picasso, van Gogh, Monet, Seurat and others. To view the Rotunda's current exhibition, whatever it may be, begin on the top floor and walk down the sloping ramp. This is the best way to get the most out of the combination of art and architecture.Admission to the Guggenheim MuseumAdult admission is $25. Members get in free; guests of members receive 50% off. Visitors pay what they wish on Saturday evenings. Students and seniors receive a discount, and children under 12 enter for free. Guided tours and audio tours are free. The museum is closed on Thursdays.Parking and public transportation to the Guggenheim MuseumStreet parking around the museum is available, and there are several parking garages nearby that offer discounts for museum visitors. Several subways and buses stop near the museum. If coming from the west side of Manhattan, take the crosstown bus (M86) heading east from 86th Street.Food at the Guggenheim MuseumThe Wright is a James Beard award-winning restaurant that serves lunch and brunch focusing on local, fresh ingredients. Entrées start at about $20. Café 3 overlooks Central Park, with coffee and light fare on the menu.Insider tip for visitors to the Guggenheim MuseumSome artwork may not be on view at all times. A gallery may be closed if the museum is preparing a new exhibition. This occasionally includes the Kandinsky Gallery and the Rotunda. When access to the Rotunda is restricted, discount admission is offered. Always call ahead to check if any part of the museum is off-limits.Author's bio: Michele DeBella is a freelance writer based in New York City.
