Incorporated in 1996, African American Planning Commission is a nonprofit organization that provides a range of affordable housing, education and health care programs for individuals suffering from HIV and AIDS. It addresses various issues related to poverty, homelessness, domestic violence and unemployment. The organization offers services to the communities of Oceanhill, Brownsville, East New York, Bedford Stuyvesant, Bushwick and Crown Heights in New York City. It coordinates a variety of transitional housing and youth-, children- and family-centered programs. The organization additionally provides crisis management, 24-hour shelter, and job training and placement services. It operates Serenity House Family Residence, which is a 40-plus-bed unit that offers transitional residence solutions for survivors of domestic violence with their dependent children. The organization maintains a subsidiary, AAPCI/Africa, provides HIV and AIDS education and micro-business enterprise development programs in sub-Saharan Africa. African American Planning Commission is funded by the State of New York.
