The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, established in 1978, preserves historical buildings, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. It manages museum of fine arts, American and Indian arts and culture, natural history and science, international folk art and space history. The department operates National Hispanic Cultural Center that exhibits a variety of Hispanic arts and undertakes various performances, genealogy research and activities. The services provided by the department include identifying and recording historical places, maintaining records, administering preservation laws and assisting governments in developing preservation regulations and ordinances. It operates more than 1,000 libraries that provide work-related information and reference materials to visually impaired and disabled people. The department is located in Santa Fe, N.M.
