James Canyon Cemetery

Cemeteries of New Mexico is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural cemetery history of the great state of New Mexico. They provide a platform for the general viewing public to access cemetery photographs and inscriptions free of charge, and encourage individuals to contribute their own transcriptions and photos to further enrich the database.

Located behind the James Canyon Church, about 10 miles east of Cloudcroft on highway 82, James Canyon Cemetery in Otero County, NM is a serene resting place that holds the memories of individuals such as Lemuel Cotten and Rebecca E. Crow Cotten. Lemuel tragically lost his life in 1902 when a tree fell on the tent he was sleeping in, while Rebecca, the wife of James W. Cotten, passed away in 1899. Although specific inscriptions are currently unavailable, Cemeteries of New Mexico welcomes contributions from the public to enhance the historical records of this cemetery and others across the state.
