Founded in 1855, Woodland Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey, was originally known as the West Newark Cemetery and later referred to as the German Cemetery due to its early burials of ethnic Germans. Covering approximately 36.5 acres with over 80,000 burials, it remains an active cemetery celebrated for its historic significance as one of the region's first rural or garden cemeteries.
Managed by a volunteer Board of Managers, Woodland Cemetery is dedicated to preserving its historic features and honoring those interred within its grounds, which include over 600 war veterans from various U.S. conflicts. The Board actively seeks to enhance the cemetery's landscape and welcomes donations to support ongoing maintenance and restoration efforts.
