more than 300 years ago local lenape tribes traveled to the barrier island of long beach island new jersey... arriving in wooden dugout canoes they sought an escape from the seasonal summer heat...while on the island they enjoyed bay & ocean breezes, fished & clammed, gathered shells and explored the nature and wildlife here on the island... these tribes blazed the trail for the semi permanent camps established by 1690 & over the years the island has continued to provide not only the traditions its original lanape inhabitants enjoyed but a natural beauty and relaxed life style that only island life can offer... so welcome...to long beach island...& to the 1690 culinary market...
