Founded in 1971 by Charles Hedlund and local residents, Save Barnegat Bay initially emerged as the Ocean County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America. This grassroots initiative sprang to life in response to a development proposal impacting what we now know as Traders Cove and F-Cove in Brick Township.

Fast forward to 1985, a transformative year for the organization. Save Barnegat Bay underwent a revitalization, broadening its focus to encompass the entire watershed and adopting its current moniker. Today, Save Barnegat Bay stands as a stalwart guardian of the bay and its delicate ecosystem, advocating tirelessly across Ocean and Monmouth Counties to uphold its mission of conservation and restoration.
