History

Picnic was established in 1975 as a Portuguese coffee shop where you could get a good espresso, some pastries & sandwiches. The most important was getting Portuguese newspapers flown daily from Portugal and picked from Kennedy Airport upon airplane arrival. It was a twice-weekly trip to the Kennedy Airport for the latest printed news. The Portuguese community was consisting of old immigration and the very recent from Portugal, Mozambique and Angola. In 1982, Mr. Castelo opened the first in Newark open pit BBQ serving traditionally prepared chicken and ribs. Picnic was the first Portuguese charcoal BBQ restaurant in Northern New Jersey and remains a favorite in the Ironbound area after decades of serving great food.
