Melissa Leyva, MD is a member of Summit Health's Pediatric Gastroenterology team. Dr. Leyva treats a wide range of pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, including constipation, abdominal pain, reflux, celiac disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, feeding issues, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

She has a special interest in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other GI complications of obesity. In addition, she also provides care to patients with a wide range of liver disorders, including auto-immune hepatitis, biliary atresia, and chronic hepatitis B and C.

"As a caregiver, I enjoy educating my patients and their parents so that they feel empowered to work towards better health," says Dr. Leyva. "I utilize a child-centered approach and believe in partnering with families to provide compassionate and up-to-date care."

Dr. Leyva is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist. She is a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN). Dr. Leyva has published articles and abstracts in various prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals including Gastroenterology, American Journal of Medical Genetics, and Ambulatory Pediatrics.

Among her many honors and awards is the NASPGHAN Fellows Research Award. She has also been recognized by New Jersey Family Favorite Kid's Docs and Bergen County's Top Docs for pediatric gastroenterology.

Prior to joining Summit Health, Dr. Leyva served as attending Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Hackensack Meridian Health. Dr. Leyva is a graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY and completed her fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

When not seeing patients in the office, Dr. Leyva enjoys spending time outdoors biking and hiking with her two boys.

She adds, Patients with endocrine disorders need very specialized, individual care, and I make sure they receive that during a visit with me and throughout their treatment plan.When not caring for patients, Dr. Weitzner enjoys knitting, baking, spending time with family and friends, and attending shows on Broadway.
