Lower Passaic River Phase I Removal Action
The Lower Passaic River Phase I Removal Action is a restoration project located in Newark, NJ. It focuses on the cleanup and removal of contaminated sediment from a 2-acre area of the river adjacent to the Diamond Alkali Superfund Site. The project includes the construction of a steel sheet pile enclosure to isolate the material during sediment removal activities, as well as the use of a pipeline to transport the slurried sediment to an Upland Processing Facility for treatment and disposal.
The Upland Processing Facility, located downstream of the Phase I Work Area, is equipped with the necessary tools to remove water from sediments, treat the water, and load the dewatered sediments into lined and sealed containers. These containers, along with debris and filter cake dewatered sediments, are then transported to Brills Yard for further handling and eventual transport to out-of-state treatment or disposal facilities. The project ensures the protection of public health and the environment by following a designated truck route that avoids residential neighborhoods, schools, parks, and other sensitive areas.
