KenCrest was founded in 1905 in Philadelphia by Sister Maria Roeck, a Lutheran deaconess, under the name of Kensington Dispensary. Its original mission was to aide in the treatment of tuberculosis. In 1955, the organization shifted its mission and focus to the guidance of Sister Grace Jones and began serving people with mental retardation and other disabilities. KenCrest merged its two divisions in 1970 and became recognized by as KenCrest Centers. Over the past 35 years, the agency has broadened its area of service to include the five-county metropolitan Philadelphia-area and Delaware. In 1995, KenCrest convened the first national conference in the United States on medically fragile, technology-dependent children. KenCrest is based in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

The Special Children's Center, founded in 1996, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a wide range of services and support for families with children who have special needs. With a team of 400 staff members and 600 volunteers, the center serves 850 families annually, offering respite care, education, residential services, adult services, advocacy, and case management.
