History of Merrimac Savings Banking In April 1871, before the Town was incorporated, a meeting was held in the Banking Room of the First National Bank of Amesbury, which was located in West Amesbury, Massachusetts. The reason for the meeting was to organize Amesbury Savings Bank Merrimac had been part of Amesbury and was known as West Amesbury, but was incorporated as a separate town in 1876. The records of Banks in Massachusetts however indicate the Merrimac Savings Bank was incorporated on April 19, 1871, thus tying our Bank to the institution which was originally known as Amesbury Savings Bank. The first reference to the name we have today is contained in minutes dated January 19, 1880, which are contained in the Bank Ledger. Our initial location was 2 Church Street, but we eventually moved to the Poyer Block which had been built in 1886 to house a carriage finding business and this historic location continues to be our home Since our establishment in 1871 our goal has been to provide the very best service possible to the people of Merrimac and the surrounding communities. Our motto "Traditions of the past, services of the future", is indicative of our belief in strong customer driven goals as well as providing our customers with innovative ways to solve their banking needs.
