Monarch Casino & Resort was established in 1972 as a partnership between David Farahi and his brother-in-law Isaac Poura, when the two purchased the Golden Door Motel in Reno, Nev. In 1983, the motel began operating as a Travelodge franchise. In 1987, the company secured the rights from the City of Reno to place up to 50 slot machines on the property.
