Lehman Caves National Monument, located in Baker, NV, was declared a national monument by President Warren G. Harding in 1922. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the caves were initially operated by private operators, Clarence and Beatrice Rhodes, who purchased the surrounding property and guided visitors through the caves. Under their custodianship, the caves saw improvements, including the construction of cabins and a lodge, and became a popular destination for weddings, concerts, and pack trips to Wheeler Peak.
In the early 1930s, the management of Lehman Caves National Monument was transferred to Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Cue, and later, the Rhodes property was acquired by the county and donated to the federal government. Today, Lehman Caves continues to captivate visitors with its wondrous beauty and rich history, offering guided tours and a glimpse into the past when the Rhodes family played a significant role in its development and popularity.
