In 2021, the painter Samuel Bak donated over 512 paintings to the University of Nebraska Omaha. The works, which range from 1948 to the present, showcase the arc of his artistic career over eight decades. Bak’s work weaves together personal and global histories through a series of layered metaphors to articulate an iconography of his Holocaust experience. His art reflects a relentless questioning of humankind’s propensity to violence and the place of hope in the face of destruction. His worlds are provisionally pieced back together, preserving the memory of the twentieth-century ruination of Jewish life and culture, while demonstrating the enduring power of artistic passion and the creativity of the human spirit. The museum is free and open to all publics.
