Gavins Point Dam
Gavin's Point Dam is a significant part of the federal dam and reservoir system along the mainstem Missouri River, providing flood risk reduction for downstream populations and properties. Located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, it is the smallest and furthest downstream of the mainstem projects. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the dam serves multiple purposes including hydropower generation, water supply, irrigation, fish and wildlife conservation, navigation, and recreation.
The dam, which has been in operation since 1955, is part of a larger system of six federal dams and reservoirs that work together to balance various benefits. When not actively reducing flood impacts, Gavin's Point Dam plays a crucial role in maintaining a balance between flood control, navigation, hydropower, irrigation, water supply, water quality, and recreation. It is an essential component of the Missouri River basin, contributing to the overall management and conservation of the region's water resources.
