Powder River County, located in southeastern Montana, is a rural agricultural area spanning 3297 square miles with a low population density of 0.6 persons per square mile. Established in 1919, the county was named after the Powder River, known for its gunpowder-colored sand and described as "a mile wide and an inch deep."

Home to the county seat and major business center, Broadus, Powder River County is primarily rural and agricultural, with limited oil and timber production. The area is characterized by vast rangelands, reflecting a national trend of mechanization in farming and ranching operations.
