The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes have taken over ownership and management of the Bison Range, formerly known as the National Bison Range, through federal trust ownership under Public Law 116-260. Established in 1908 by the U.S. Federal Government on land within the Flathead Indian Reservation, the Bison Range is now stewarded by award-winning natural resource managers from the CSKT. Descendants of the free-ranging Reservation herd started by Tribal members in the 1800s, the bison on the Bison Range play a vital role in conservation efforts.
