The Billings Regional Landfill is the largest landfill in Montana, spanning 800 acres and receiving over 350,000 tons of garbage per year from five counties. With a lifespan of approximately 70 years, the landfill is designed with on-site clay soils and a synthetic liner to prevent contamination of groundwater. The waste pile is managed using the Alternate Daily Cover (ADC) process, which includes covering the waste with posi-shell to prevent litter problems, odors, and scavenging animals, as well as wind screens to catch blowing debris. Accepted waste types include municipal waste, non-hazardous waste, and inert waste, with special handling required for items such as paint solvents, automotive chemicals, and medical waste.
