Founded in 1879, Saint Louis Art Museum features beaux-arts style building. It is an independent entity within Washington University. The museum s galleries host exhibition by various cultural institutions around the world. Saint Louis Art Museum features a series of contemporary art exhibitions, as well as regular events showcasing media art and works on paper. Its collection includes ancient Chinese bronzes, and Oceanic, pre-Columbian, European and American artwork. The museum has a shop that sells a selection of art books, gifts, posters, postcards and prints. Saint Louis Art Museum s education department offers a range of classes and community outreach activities. In addition, its Richardson Memorial Library maintains more than 100,000 volumes of books, exhibition catalogues and art periodicals. The museum provides membership options for students and families.
