Solutia traces its roots back to 1901 and the founding of the Monsanto Company. Solutia was founded in 1997 as a spin-off company of Monsanto for the purpose of developing specialty chemicals. Solutia s products are produced in four categories that include films and glass products, such as automotive glass and residential windows; nylon, which includes carpet and nylon polymers and plastics; pharmaceutical services; and specialty products, such as heat transfer fluids, aviation hydraulic fluids and cleaning solvents. Solutia carries out its operations through approximately 60 locations in more than 30 countries. The company employs nearly 6,000 people at these sites. Solutia maintains its headquarters in St. Louis.
