Established in 1851, Missouri School for the Blind is a residential day school serving more than 1,200 children and youth up to 21 years, in the center base at St. Louis. The school offers programs in reading and writing Braille for the visually impaired. It also offers programs, such as orientation and mobility, and teaches independent living skills. Under its Missouri Deafblind Technical Assistance project it provides technical resources and training, develops partnerships and coordinates service networking for the visually impaired. Through its association with North Central Association of Schools, it offers varsity sports programs in wrestling, track, swimming, bowling and cheerleading. The school also offers Special Olympics and scouting programs. Through its Centerbase program it offers services, including psychological evaluations, social work, and speech, occupational and physical therapies. The school also has a library that provides reference materials, CDs, Braille books, newspapers and picture books.
