Midwest Library Service providers books from more than 20,000 United States, Canadian, and United Kingdom publishers each year. Midwest Library offers coverage within the following spectrum of publishing: university presses, scientific, technical and health science publishers; trade presses, small presses, reference presses, textbook presses and paperback presses, including trade, quality and mass market, religious and theological presses, re-printers, associations, societies, institutes, nonprofit organizations, privately-published and corporate. The company s University Press Approval Plan provides comprehensive coverage of university press publications with automatic shipments as the books are published. The plan encompasses all bona fide university presses including Cambridge, Oxford and Toronto, as well as many other university press imprints that are distributed by these presses. The annual output of these presses is approximately 10,000 titles per year.

From its beginning, The Booksource has been a family business. It started as a wholesaler to retail bookstores, but over the years, in order to diversify and strengthen the business, The Booksource has entered the education market by selling books to teachers and school librarians. Its facility has grown as well, from 6,000 square feet in 1974 to over 67,000 square feet. When it first began, The Booksource inventoried approximately 5,000 titles, but now inventories over 45,000. Then in 2000, The Booksource began another diversification program by purchasing a specialty publishing company, Peaceable Kingdom Press. Peaceable Kingdom is a manufacturer of greeting cards, posters, bookmarks, baby journals and other products using artwork from classic children s books. This publishing division helps The Booksource to increase the gross profit while giving it the opportunity to grow its own proprietary products.
