The Wilderness Arts and Literacy Collaborative (WALC) is an academic program based in Fort Leonard Wood, MO that integrates environmental studies and ethnic studies to provide an interdisciplinary educational experience for lower-income youth of color. Through field studies and classroom learning, WALC aims to engage students in rigorous and relevant curricula that center the historical and contemporary experiences of people of color, while also fostering a deeper understanding of nature and its application to themselves, their communities, and society. Established in 1999, WALC was created by teachers of color for students of color, making it a unique program in the field of environmental education. By immersing students in natural environments and facilitating their academic growth through real-world study, WALC offers an alternative educational experience that addresses critical academic needs and promotes a sense of self and place among its participants.
