The St. Joseph Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) Program, housed at the Robert Keatley Center, serves adults aged 17 and above in need of high school equivalency (HSE), English language learning, skill enhancement, or career and college readiness. Originally launched in 1954 by Principal Ruth Huston, the program caters to residents of Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton, and DeKalb counties, with an additional satellite location in Cameron. Enrolling around 800 students annually, the AEL program offers HSE and ELL courses.
English classes at the Keatley Center are tailored to various proficiency levels and come at no cost. With morning and evening options twice a week, students undergo assessments in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for suitable class placement. Additionally, citizenship classes are provided for English learners seeking expanded educational opportunities. Prospective students are encouraged to visit the center for enrollment details.
