For someone who is suffering from chronic pain, there is hope. There is help available. I will offer patients the same kind of compassion that they have been getting from their primary care physicians. Hopefully we can find a way to diagnose their pain and treat it so they don't have to live with this pain.

A lot of our older patients may have emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and until you speak with them, you really don't realize how big of a burden this disease process has on their lives. Often times they feel they can't keep up with their grandkids, or can't go on vacation, or go for walks with their dog. You really have to listen to the patient in order to devise a treatment plan that works for them.

Venkata Anand Varma Gottumukkala, MD, is a board-certified pulmonologist who specializes in managing a wide range of lung and sleep disorders with special interests in healthy living, sleep hygiene, weight loss and mindfulness. He graduated from Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India and completed his residency and a pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine fellowship at the University at Buffalo.
