The Clay County African American Legacy, Inc. (CCAAL, Inc.) was established in 2000 to enhance the quality of life for citizens in the Northland by promoting cultural diversity through education, particularly for youth. In 2003, the organization acquired the historic Garrison School, originally founded in 1877 to educate Black youth in Liberty, Missouri, creating a permanent base for ongoing community programming.
CCAAL, Inc. has initiated several projects, including the construction of a Freedom Fountain Monument and the installation of a mural celebrating African American pioneers, businesses, schools, and churches from the 1820s to the present day. These efforts reflect the organization's commitment to preserving and sharing the rich cultural heritage of the African American community in Clay County and the Greater Kansas City area.
