When a patient has a surgical issue, especially, those that are more urgent, it's important for me to be able to articulate that surgical need, articulate the risks and benefits and to be able to gain that person's trust to know that I will be taking care of them just like I would take care of anyone that I was related to, any of my family members, my mother, brother, or sister. That's really the oath we took in medicine and in surgery specifically.

We have the privilege of interacting with people at a very intimate level. It is a special, special relationship. You know you get to know people, you get to know their families, you become a part of their journey. I think it is just a big privilege and honor and I enjoy that; I appreciate that, and I respect that.

I love the personal interaction I get with patients. I love following patients out. I don't just see them once, I see them, I see their families, I see their relatives, their friends. It's really nice to build a relationship with patients and not just treat them for one problem.
