I considered becoming a teacher, but I wanted something different. I found my niche in nursing and became a nurse practitioner. I wanted to do more. I went to Haiti in 2019 and worked in a clinic and realized being a registered nurse limited my ability to help people without access to health care. Becoming a nurse practitioner broadened my knowledge and gave me more tools to help people in settings that don't have as much access to care as in the U.S. Getting those skills gave me more opportunities. If you pick a specialty, you're limited to that specialty. Family care gives you more opportunities coming out of school, and it also gives you the spectrum of patients, from birth to elderly, and caring for all of them. My clinical interests include preventive care and helping patients take responsibility for preventive measures. If individuals take responsible for their health and are willing to exercise, even if it's just a ten-minute walk or something small, it adds up.
