I chose surgical oncology because of my love for research. Cancer care evolves rapidly, with new therapies expanding curative surgery options. As new chemotherapies and new therapies are discovered, more and more patients become candidates for potentially curative surgical procedures. This is especially true in the diseases I am most passionate about, including pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, stomach (gastric) cancer, and melanoma. The Whipple procedure?my favorite operation?was once rare but now helps many. I perform liver and stomach surgeries minimally invasively with robotic and laparoscopic techniques. I can treat metastatic colorectal cancer in the liver using ablation, often sending patients home same day. Immunotherapy lets me resect melanomas once deemed unresectable. We're in an era of individualized medicine, tailoring treatment for the best outcomes. I never want patients to lose hope?new breakthroughs are always emerging.
