History
Westminster began in the mid-1950s as a Sunday church school in the then-new Bayou View neighborhood in Gulfport, Mississippi. In 1960, the church was formally organized with 121 charter members. The Rev. Frank Brooks, who was an assistant minister at Gulfport's First Presbyterian Church, served as Westminster's first pastor. In 1965, Westminster's main sanctuary was completed, followed by an educational building in 1973. Members of Westminster have been instrumental in the beginnings of several local service organizations, and, beginning in 2005, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the church housed nearly 15,000 volunteers who had come to the Mississippi Gulf Coast from all over the United States to aid in recovery efforts. Westminster has been served by nine pastors, and is currently a part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. It is committed to a thoughtful, Biblical, and Reformed faith and celebrates the gifts of men and women in all aspects of its ministry.
