International Longshoremen's Association
The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) is the largest union of maritime workers in North America, representing over 85,000 longshoremen across the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, the Great Lakes, major U.S. rivers, Puerto Rico, Eastern Canada, and the Bahamas. Established in 1892, the ILA is committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of its members and upholding the standards of the maritime industry.
With a rich history rooted in solidarity and activism, the ILA traces its origins back to the Association of Lumber Handlers, formed in 1877 on the Great Lakes. Affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, the Canadian Labour Congress, and the International Transport Workers Federation, the ILA continues to address contemporary challenges faced by dockworkers, including the impact of automation on employment.
