Gulfside Assembly, founded in 1923 by Bishop Robert E. Jones, was established as a destination for African Americans in Mississippi to enjoy recreation and community in a time of strict racial segregation. Over the years, it evolved into a place for retreats, vacations, and a hub for opposition to racism and segregation.

Despite facing challenges such as hurricanes and destruction, Gulfside Assembly has persevered with the support of Methodist leaders and volunteers, continuing its mission of providing a space for study conferences, youth retreats, and inner-city youth programs in partnership with The United Methodist Church.
