Joel attended the University of Iowa College of Law, graduating with high distinction in 2000. Joel was an active duty Air Force officer in the JAG Corps for four years. Joel served as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the 49th Fighter Wing at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, and later as an Area Defense Counsel, where he defended servicemen in the region. After leaving active duty in 2005, Joel worked as a public defender in Minnesota's Third Judicial District. Joel lives in Owatonna, and is active in the community.
