also provide the means for passing on traditional stories and skills to future generations. EFS is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to build a community of learners that teach and celebrate the wilderness heritage, art, history, culture, and craft of all people in northern Minnesota. In 2016 we offered over 225 classes and 25 events. Students came from seventeen states and one Canadian province. Past examples of classes include pine needle and black ash basket weaving, rosemaling, silver-smithing, potica-making, traditional dance, and wool felting. In 2016, and repeated in 2017, our Birch Bark Canoe Project resulted in completion of a seventeen-foot canoe, offering the Ely youth to work alongside dedicated adults.
