The Charter Township of Union, located in the southeast part of Isabella County, Michigan, was established on March 11, 1861, in support of the Union during the Civil War. Once rich with pine and hardwood forests and inhabited by the Chippewa tribe, it transformed into a center for lumbering and the oil industry throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Union Township encompasses a geographic area of 36 square miles, with its history marked by the arrival of pioneer John Hursh in 1854 and the establishment of Isabella County in 1859. The proximity to the City of Mount Pleasant allows for collaborative planning and service provision while some of the original settlements have faded or been absorbed into the city.
