Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a nationally recognized marine sanctuary located off the coast of Alpena, Michigan. With nearly 100 historic shipwrecks preserved in the cold freshwater of Lake Huron, the sanctuary is dedicated to protecting and showcasing these underwater treasures through research, education, and community involvement.

Every year, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary hosts the Thunder Bay International Film Festival, bringing impressive ocean and Great Lakes films from around the world to northeast Michigan. In addition to film screenings, visitors can enjoy social events, educational activities, and opportunities to meet filmmakers. The sanctuary also collaborates with researchers to make exciting discoveries, such as the intact shipwreck of the sailing ship Ironton, which rests upright with its three masts still standing hundreds of feet below the lake's surface.

Great 2 hour tour in Lake Huron finding shipwrecks in a glass bottom boat. Nice museum to check out before or after your tour! A nice surprise in Alpena. Highly recommend!
