St John Lutheran Church, a member of the ELCA, was founded on July 11, 1852, and celebrated its 168th anniversary in 2020. After serving the community for nearly two centuries, the church officially closed its worship facility on November 1, 2020, and has since transitioned its focus to legacy and community support through the St John ELCA Legacy Foundation of Saginaw.
In the wake of the Wixom Lake dam failure in May 2020, St John Lutheran Church adapted by transferring Camp Lu-Wix-E to the Foundation and selling the church building in 2021. Despite the challenges, many former members continue to worship at a new church in Saginaw Township, while the Foundation aims to honor the church's mission and support the local community.
