History

Scotts Mill County Park was acquired by the County in 1973 and was opened to the public in 1976 as Kalamazoo County's official Bi-Centennial Project. The park area was first settled in 1836 and the first saw mill was built near the site of the present mill shortly after. The dam, mill pond, and a new sawmill were constructed there in 1845. Sometime between 1836 and 1850 the miller's house located just north of hte mill was built. Today, the house is a private residence but remains an excellent example of the then popular Greek Revival style of architecture. The sawmill was reported to have been burned in 1896. Around 1925, new owners took over the flour mill and it became Scotts Milling Company. The mill continued to operate until 1971. The mill stood vacant for a few years until becoming acquired by the Parks. The property now serves as a county park, and the mill building has been restored as a museum that is occasionally open to the public during special events.

I adore Scott's Mill Park! My friend and I have always had our girls evenings out there. We just go out and sit on the bench of the small cabin and stare down at the gorgeous scenery and talk....

The mill has been a prominent place in my life for almost 40 years. It's where I go when I need to leave the world's problems behind.
