Portage Lake Water & Sewer
The Portage Lake Water Sewage Authority (PLWSA) was established in 1964 by the cities of Hancock and Houghton to construct and operate a joint wastewater treatment facility. The plant, located on the south shore of Hancock, was designed to handle increasing wastewater flows and is capable of treating up to 18 million gallons per day during wet periods.
Over the years, the PLWSA has implemented significant upgrades and expansions, including the installation of modern lift stations and a robust treatment process that involves anaerobic digestion and advanced UV disinfection. The processed biosolids are repurposed as a soil amendment to promote growth in local agricultural fields and rehabilitate former industrial sites.
